ANSWER FIRST
Compare the installed scope of a softener
The site’s $1,800–$3,800 range is an illustrative planning allowance, not a Henderson provider quote or survey. A usable estimate specifies resin capacity, valve, bypass, drain connection, setup and labor. A larger tank does not by itself establish better treatment or value.
Compare two written quotes at the same tested hardness and expected household demand. Include salt, regeneration water, periodic service and replacement parts in ownership cost. Plumbing access, a missing loop, drain routing or equipment protection can change the final proposal substantially.

Compare two quotes with the same installation scope
The illustrative $1,800–$3,800 allowance is a conversation starting point, not evidence that a Henderson installer will offer that price. If one proposal includes carbon filtration, rerouted plumbing or maintenance and the other does not, the totals alone are not comparable.
| Category | Get in writing | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment | Valve, resin quantity, tank, bypass and usable capacity | A package name does not specify the design |
| Installation | Loop, drain, protection, permits where applicable and restoration | Access can change labor substantially |
| Operating supplies | Salt choice, regeneration settings and checks | Costs continue after the invoice |
| Warranty | Parts versus labor, travel and maintenance obligations | Compare coverage as well as price |
A practical ownership-cost worksheet
For your chosen comparison period, add the installed quote, estimated consumables, planned service and known replacement items. Label estimates separately from written prices. Ask how salt and regeneration-water estimates relate to measured hardness and household demand. Include an optional RO system separately so cartridge and membrane costs remain visible.
Request a repair diagnosis before replacement
A return of spots does not prove an existing softener needs full replacement. Ask whether bypass position, salt bridging, settings, a valve problem or resin condition explains the symptoms. Compare repair scope and warranty with replacement. A recommendation should explain the findings without guaranteeing appliance lifespan or savings.
