ANSWER FIRST

Price the carbon stage separately

A whole-home filter should have a named purpose, such as disinfectant taste or sediment. The combined filter-and-softener allowance of $3,200–$6,500+ is not a standalone carbon-filter quote. Obtain separate line items so you know which equipment addresses each goal.

Media quantity, contact time at peak flow, valve size and replacement access affect the design. Ask whether the proposal includes sediment pretreatment, bypass plumbing and startup flushing. Carbon maintenance and replacement are separate from softener salt and resin service.

Three checks before the next step

Identify the target and rated flow

  2. 02

Ask for media type and quantity

  3. 03

A carbon quote and a combination quote are different

Compare media quantity, rated service flow, bypass and plumbing labor. Keep the carbon stage separate from the softener and kitchen RO. Ask for replacement-media labor and any disposal charge; a low tank price may exclude those later costs.
