ANSWER FIRST
Choose by the job each process performs
Ion-exchange softening removes calcium and magnesium responsible for hardness. Carbon filtration addresses certain taste, odor and certified reduction goals. Sediment cartridges trap particles. These processes should not be described as interchangeable simply because each is sold as water treatment.
For a Henderson household concerned about scale and drinking-water flavor, more than one stage may be appropriate. Ask the provider to justify each stage separately using the source, property measurements and household preference. Keep outdoor irrigation and drinking-water outlet choices explicit in the plumbing scope.
