Understand the point-of-use boundary
Reverse osmosis can reduce dissolved hardness minerals in water delivered by its dedicated faucet. It does not remove scale from existing plumbing or soften the water delivered to the whole house. A kitchen RO unit and a service-entry softener therefore solve different problems.
Ask about inlet conditions, membrane protection and rated production. A total-dissolved-solids meter can help observe membrane performance but does not prove every contaminant reduction. For a named substance, verify the actual model’s certification and keep filters serviced.
